Real Madrid have officially confirmed the sacking of manager Xabi Alonso with immediate effect. The announcement comes following Barcelona’s triumph in the Spanish Super Cup, where they secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the El Clasico, held in Saudi Arabia.
Former Liverpool midfielder Alonso was appointed as Real Madrid manager in June 2025, replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who left to take charge of the Brazilian national team.
Despite showing positive signs during his tenure, the 44-year-old tactician struggled in recent months, with injuries, poor results, and dressing room unrest compounding the club’s difficulties.
Alonso took charge on June 1 after a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he won the domestic double and reached the Europa League final.
He started well at Madrid, winning 13 of 14 games, but a defeat to Liverpool on November 4 triggered a slump of two wins in eight matches. A later five-game winning streak wasn’t enough to secure his position.
A club statement read: “Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first team coach to an end.
“Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club.
“Real Madrid will always be his home. We would like to thank Xabi Alonso and all his coaching staff for their hard work and dedication throughout this time, and wish them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.
Real Madrid currently sit four points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona and will face Albacete in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday. They are also seventh in the Champions League group phase.
