Celtics star didn’t hold back after Spurs loss and now he’s paying the price

Jaylen Brown voiced his displeasure with officials on Saturday night after a close loss to the Spurs and got his bill for the lengthy rant on Monday afternoon. The NBA announced that Brown was fined $35,000 for public criticism of officiating after a 100-95 loss to the Spurs on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Boston posted the second-fewest free throws in a game in team history, getting just four attempts in the loss. The Spurs, in comparison, had 20 free throw attempts which led Brown to go on an epic rant after the loss in the Celtics locker room.

“I feel like, honestly, they just got away with a lot, and I’m tired of the inconsistency,” Brown said. “I’ll accept the fine at this point. I thought it was some (expletive) tonight. I think they’re a good defensive team, but they ain’t that damn good. I hope somebody can just pull up the clips because it’s the same (expletive) every time we play a good team.

“It’s like they refuse to make a call. Then call touch falls on the other end. That’s just extremely frustrating, bro, like we play hard. We were outplaying our expectations. We compete hard on the defensive end. Then they reward the other team with touch fouls. Then we go down there and guys are allowed to get away with — I hope, just somebody please pull it up. Every time we play a good team, the inconsistency is crazy. I’ll take the (expletive) fine.”

Brown has been critical of the officiating at several points this season but this was his first fine of the year. He did not attempt a free throw in the loss.

The Celtics star is averaging a career-high 29.6 points per game and 7.2 free throw attempts per game.
