“We’ll see where that all goes as the season comes along, but CJ’s been awesome,” Saleh said in his media address for the Hawks on Monday. “He’s somebody that I think could fit here long term as well."
The Hawks have obtained McCollum alongside Corey Kispert from the Washington Wizards for Trae Young.
The veteran guard has been a stellar presence and leader around the young Wizards group. Playing in 35 games as a Wizard, he averaged 18.8 points, 3.6 assists and 3.5 boards.
While he stands uncertain in addressing the team's future with McCollum, who holds an expiring $30.6 million contract, Saleh is loving what he sees around the 34-year-old so far.
McCollum made his Hawks debut on Sunday, helping them prevail with a solid 124-111 road win over the Golden State Warriors with 12 points and four dimes in 24 minutes off the bench.
"I’m really, really excited about having him here," Saleh added about McCollum, "But yeah, I can’t really say anything about extension talks and negotiations.”
