Mohamed Salah’s focus has shifted entirely to international duty these past weeks, with the Egypt star leading the Pharaohs’ charge at the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. His tournament performances have been exceptional, netting four goals across five matches to guide Egypt through to the semi-finals, where they face Senegal on Wednesday.

The Liverpool attacker scored crucial goals against Zimbabwe, South Africa, and defending champions Ivory Coast in a thrilling 3-2 quarter-final victory, becoming only the third Egyptian to reach double figures at AFCON with 11 career tournament goals.

While contract uncertainty and tensions with manager Arne Slot dominated headlines at Anfield in December, Salah’s AFCON commitments have effectively put those issues on hold. However, David Ornstein has now provided an update on the situation – and has suggested that he expects Salah to remain at Anfield for the rest of the season:

“Despite recent uncertainty, the Egypt attacker is fully expected to finish the campaign at Anfield,” he wrote in the Athletic’s Transfer Dealsheet.

“It will be hoped his situation then settles down and that he sees out the rest of his agreement, which runs until June 2027. However, if problems remain, it is possible conversations will take place about parting ways early.”

The timing of Salah’s AFCON participation coincides with what has been a turbulent period for Liverpool off the pitch. Manager Arne Slot will be hoping that a refreshed and mentally rejuvenated Salah returns to Merseyside with a renewed focus on delivering silverware for the Reds.

The tournament has provided a welcome distraction from the contract saga, allowing the winger to concentrate purely on football and international pride. How he translates this tournament form back to Anfield remains to be seen.
