Manchester United have agreed a deal to make the former Championship manager their interim boss following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils parted ways with Ruben Amorim earlier this month following a public fallout with the board. Darren Fletcher had been handed responsibility on a temporary basis but Carrick is set to be in charge in time to oversee the side in the Premier League clash with Manchester City this weekend.
Manchester United were defeated 2-1 at home by Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday and are now without a win in their last four outings. Carrick previously had a three-game stint as temporary boss at the club following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.
Manchester United agree deal with Michael Carrick
Providing the latest on the manager hunt on Tuesday morning, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote: “Michael Carrick, already at Carrington with official announcement expected as next formal step. Manchester United have agreed all terms of his short term contract and also his backroom staff.”
Carrick was sacked by Middlesbrough in June after two and a half years in charge at the Riverside Stadium. The manager had taken the North East side to the Championship play-offs in the 2022/23 campaign.
The former Premier League midfielder had been touted as the frontrunner to replace Nuno Espirito Santo at West Ham, should the current Hammers boss be given his marching orders. West Ham edged past QPR in the FA Cup on Sunday but still languish 18th in the table.
West Ham miss out on potential Nuno Espirito Santo replacement
The London outfit are now seven points adrift of safety following painful defeats to Wolves and Nottingham Forest. Nuno has been backed by the club in the January transfer window but was called to an ‘emergency meeting’ last week according to Hammers News.
The Hammers face a tricky run of fixtures before the end of the month with visits to Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea either side of welcoming Sunderland to the London Stadium.
West Ham may have one eye on a potential Championship campaign next season, given the gap opening up at the bottom of the Premier League table. It’s for that reason that former Everton and Liverpool man Don Hutchinson had encouraged the club to move for Carrick.
Writing on social media, Hutchinson said: “I would appoint Michael Carrick with the view of keeping West Ham up or worst case scenario prepare for the championship. Big call for the board this one!”
