Dual-sided LED display marks NBA China Games comeback

More than 2,000 ROE Visual Topaz 2.6 panels were required for a 500 sq metre, 70 million pixel jumbutron in Macao which used a dual-surface configuration, increasing surface area by 60%.

A 500 sq metre LED installation featuring more than 70 million pixels marked the return of the NBA China Games after a hiatus of nearly six years.

The installation at the Venetian Macao hotel – the venue for the event – comprised more than 2,000 of ROE Visual’s Topaz 2.6 panels.

Sands China Entertainment, which operates the hotel, tasked Solotech with providing the equipment and managing the project.

The aim was to create an LED display suspended above the basketball court hosting the two games that could deliver functional and visually stunning content including live stats, player profiles, instant replays, sponsored content and immersive show visuals.

Sands China was seeking an adaptable and scalable solution that could be redeployed and reconfigured across its portfolio of venues and special events.

A trip to ROE Visual’s headquarters in Shenzhen offered peace of mind that the Topaz LED panels ticked all the boxes.

While originally engineered for the AV rental market, the Topaz 2.6’s curving and modular flexibility empowers designers to move beyond traditional flat LED walls to build dynamic, custom configurations.

The original scope called for a conventional jumbotron-style display, focused primarily on exterior-facing screens for spectators.

However, following the NBA Legends Celebrity Game in 2024, Sands China expanded the concept to a dual-surface configuration with interior and exterior-facing LED screens – increasing the total display area by nearly 60%.

Unlike a traditional jumbotron, which projects only outwards in four directions, this set-up would ensure spectators would experience clear and dynamic visuals from every vantage point.

Solotech and ROE Visual rapidly adapted, navigating technical and logistical challenges to deliver the expanded solution to a tight production timeline.

Designing a dual-surface LED structure that met NBA-regulated height requirements demanded engineering creativity and precision. Although the interior and exterior displays were hung on independent truss systems, custom corner solutions had to be fabricated to support the precise, parallel geometry.

Equally critical was the development of a detailed load-distribution strategy that could safely support both LED surfaces, while preserving the required 12m clearance above the court.

As The Venetian Macao owns the ROE Visual Topaz panels, the technology can be redeployed across Sands China’s portfolio of resorts, arenas and entertainment spaces, maximising the return on investment.
