Former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is reported to have undergone a medical at Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon.
Spurs have agreed a £34.7 million deal with the La Liga giants to bring Gallagher back to the Premier League. It’s an important coup for Thomas Frank, who is without Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski in the centre of the park due to injury.
Gallagher could make his Spurs debut against West Ham on Saturday in a must-win match for under pressure Frank. The England international is set to return to the top flight for the first time since leaving Stamford Bridge in August 2024 to join Atletico on a £34 million deal.
Tottenham Hotspur set to sign ex Chelsea midfielder
The midfielder is a product of the Chelsea youth academy and made 95 first team appearances for the Blues, captaining the side during his time at Stamford Bridge. On leaving the club, Gallagher said: “To everyone at Chelsea, thank you for making my dreams come true. It's been an absolute honour every time I put on the shirt, and it was a dream come true to captain the team on many occasions.
“I loved every moment. These memories will last forever. I appreciate all the love and support from the fans. Hearing the chant of my name at the Bridge is a special feeling, and the banner you displayed [against Spurs] meant the world to me. Thank you for everything. I wish the club all the best for the future, and I hope to see you all soon at Stamford Bridge.”
Spurs supporters will have to overlook Gallagher’s previous affinity for a fierce London rival with one supporter suggesting that the club should own the elephant in the room when unveiling the player.
‘Run This Back’ - Spurs sent message over Conor Gallagher transfer announcement
The social media user referenced a tongue-in-cheek video of Matt Docherty deleting an old post referencing a love for Arsenal when arriving at Spurs. They wrote: “Spurs running this back would make me chuckle tbh.”
The idea split opinion online with some supporters labelling it an ‘incredible meme’ and another rating the ‘wind up’. However, others pleaded for the club not to follow a similar style, labelling it an ‘embarrassment’ should they do so given recent form on the pitch.
Gallagher has played against Spurs seven times during his career, twice for West Brom, twice for Crystal Palace and four times for Chelsea. The midfielder has never scored against his potential new club, but did register an assist in both of his outings against Tottenham during the 2023/24 campaign - Chelsea winning 4-1 at Spurs and 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
