Why Jurgen Klopp may be really eager for Liverpool to knock Brighton out of the FA Cup - opinion

Liverpool progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 win over Barnsley on Monday.

The Reds’ performance was questionable, given they looked far from the dominant side despite Arne Slot playing what was pretty close to a full-strength team.

However, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike’s impressive showings off the bench gave some hope that Liverpool can turn things around on the pitch in the coming months.

Jurgen Klopp’s FA Cup record could be broken this season

Liverpool have an impressive history in the competition, lifting the trophy on eight occasions.

Only Manchester United (13) and Arsenal (14) have won the FA Cup more, with the Reds’ last success coming in 2022.

They played out a rather dull 0-0 draw at Wembley Stadium against Chelsea, eventually winning 6-5 on penalties.

Regardless, Liverpool still came out on top and in the process, Jurgen Klopp was able to set a record.

After beating the Blues, Klopp became the only German manager ever to lift the FA Cup trophy.

However, there is a chance that said record could be ended this season, especially if Liverpool lose to Brighton.

Currently, there are two German managers in the Premier League, both of whom are still going strong in the FA Cup.

Daniel Farke’s Leeds United play Birmingham City in the next round, while Fabian Hurzeler and his Brighton team are now set to go head-to-head with Liverpool.

If the Seagulls were to knock out a club the size of the Reds, it could spur them on to go and win the competition. This would see Hurzeler join Klopp in the record books.

Liverpool vs Brighton head-to-head record

In recent years, Liverpool have a decent record against Brighton.

They most recently beat the South Coast outfit on December 13, 2025, with Mohamed Salah coming off the bench to provide an assist.

In total, they have won four of their last five meetings against Brighton, but they did taste defeat in their last FA Cup clash.

Brighton won 2-1 on January 29, 2023, with Harvey Elliott’s 30th-minute opener being cancelled out by Lewis Dunk and a late goal from Kaoru Mitoma.
