While both Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis are out, the Dallas Mavericks got a new injury update on the return timeline of their star guard.
While the Dallas Mavericks haven’t had the season, or past 12 months for that matter, that fans were hoping for, the latest Kyrie Irving injury update could signal some good news for the 15-25 team.
According to Grant Afseth of the Dallas Hoops Journal, Irving, who tore his Achilles last March, could be inching closer to a return this season, with a major chance he returns to the Mavericks after the NBA All-Star break.
“While the Mavericks have not publicly communicated a return timetable for Irving, sources tellDallasHoopsJournal.com there has been no indication he will be shut down for the season,” Afseth wrote. “Instead, the prevailing expectation is that Irving’s return would more realistically come after the NBA All-Star break as it stands, rather than before it.”

While Irving could return in hopes of helping this heavily injured Mavericks team, Anthony Davis‘ recent injury and the subsequent expectationof that drasticallydropping his trade value have overshadowed Cooper Flagg‘s strong performances in his rookie season.
Kyrie Irving ACL Injury Update
Since the season began, there have been differing reports on when Irving could, andexpects to return. While previously there was a thought that he could be sidelined for the entire season, that reality can likely now be ruled out.
The typical recovery timeline for a torn ACL injury used to be about 12 months, but as seen in the NBA and NFL, thattime frame has beencut down. Irving would still miss about 11 months if he did return after the mid-February All-Star break, but the new report from Afseth at least signals some positive news for Dallas.
“From a firsthand perspective, Irving’s progress has been evident. During a workout observed while the Mavericks were on the road, he looked sharp, explosive, and efficient as he moved through a full on-court session,” Afseth wrote on Irving’s recent on-court workouts. “The workout with assistant coach Phil Handy featured sustained movement and live-ball activity, with Irving changing directions fluidly and working through sequences designed to simulate game-like demands. There was no visible hesitation as he progressed through drills.”
Though there is no direct timeline on Irving’s return issued by the Mavericks themselves, throughout his recovery, Irving has maintained that he is ‘on schedule’ to get back sometime this year.
“Yeah, I’m right on schedule, guys. There’s consistency here. I’m right on schedule,”Irving said before the season began. “For me, my advice, the best advice I got is just take your time. No timeline is going to be perfect.Don’t compare it to anyone else andjust enjoy the process.”
There was previously hope that Dallas would wait for Irving to return and play alongside Davis and Flagg before the front office addressed trades and their overall future, but after a recent injury to the former, that could all be thrown out the window now.
Anthony Davis Injury Update
When healthy, Davis is one of the best two-way players in the league, with the ability to both lead a defense while scoring at least 25 points a night. But so far in Dallas, that hasn’t been the case, as he’s played just 20 games this year, and could likely be sidelined for another few months after a recent hand injury.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Davis suffered sustained ligament damage in his hand after a light collision with Lauri Markkanen in a recent game against the Utah Jazz.
“Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis has sustained ligament damage in his left hand, sources tell me and@BannedMacMahon,” he wrote in a post on X. “Depending on second opinion and if surgery is required, Davis could miss a number of months.”
Davis has now missed major time witha number of injuries since arriving in Dallas in the blockbuster trade that saw Luka Doncic move to the Los Angeles Lakers. While former general manager Nico Harrison thought the big man would provide the Mavericks with a better chance at winning a title, that has not been the case.
Most recently, head coach Jason Kiddoffered up an update on Davis, who, at this point, has no timeline for a return.

“I think that’s sometime this week that he’ll talk to the doctors, but there is no schedule or timetable.”
He added, “We’ve been through this before.”
“I think that’s sometime this week that he’ll talk to the doctors,” Kiddtold reporters. “But there is no schedule or timetable on when he’s going to make that announcement.”
Kidd added that Davis will decideon his own if surgery ishis best move. Despite the trade rumors surrounding the star, he appears to be staying in Dallas past the February 5th trade deadline.
The Mavericks also have P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, and Dereck Lively on the injury report. The health concerns for the team this year have massively overshadowed Flagg’s strong start to his career.
