Arsenal announce Dutch deal–Gunners star working on Emirates exit–Defender excited after joining Arsenal

Here is a roundup of the top Arsenal news, gossip and transfer latest from icfootballnews featuring the likes of Renée Slegers, Smilla Holmberg and Gabriel Martinelli that we think you may have missed…

Arsenal are delighted to announce that head coach Renée Slegers has signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2029 and ended all speculation that a move away could happen at the end of the season

The 36-year-old Dutchwoman has been at ARSENAL since the summer of 2023, when she joined as assistant coach, following a two-year spell in charge of Rosengard. There, she’d won back-to-back Swedish league titles in 2021 and 2022.

“From playing in the academy and being in the stands watching Arsenal win the Champions League in 2007, to living it with our players, staff and supporters last summer, I’m immensely proud to have shared this journey with Arsenal, a club that means so much to me and to so many people,” said Renée.

“I’m delighted to have signed a new contract here, as I believe we have so much to achieve together – this season and in the years to come. I’d like to show my gratitude to our supporters for the incredible backing you give us, whether it’s at Emirates Stadium, Meadow Park or on the road. We hear it, we see it and we feel it every day.”

Director of Women’s Football, Clare Wheatley, added: “We’re delighted Renée has signed a new long-term contract with us. Since taking over, first on an interim basis and then as our permanent head coach, Renée has proved to be an elite coach with the capabilities to lead us as we continue to challenge to win major trophies.

‘Together with our supporters, we look forward to continuing our successful journey with Renée in the years to come.”

Chief Executive Officer, Richard Garlick, said: “Renée has already achieved great things as our head coach, leading us to our second Champions League title in her first season in charge. Beyond this, Renée has embraced the values and ambitions of ARSENAL, driving standards and progress as we aim to compete consistently at the top of the women’s game.

‘We now look ahead to an exciting second half of the season, with five trophies to play for. Our huge congratulations to Renée and her family.”

HOLMBERG VERY HAPPY

Smilla Holmberg has opened up and admitted that she couldnt wait to join Arsenal after it was revealed just last week that the defender joined the club from Hammarby IF

Speaking to the club at the Sobha Realty Training Centre in her first club interview, Smilla said: “Incredible and very special. ARSENAL is a huge club with high standards and it’s unreal to be honest.

“I think everyone, especially me, has grown up watching Arsenal play. It’s very special and I’m so proud to be here and can’t wait to get started.

“I think it’s just something special with Arsenal; the fans, the environment to develop here as a player. I think it’s a familiar place to be in and it’s something special. It’s hard to put into words but Arsenal is something really special.

“I felt like this year I’ve taken big steps in my career. I felt like it was the time for me to try something else and step out of my comfort zone. When I had my first conversation with Arsenal, I felt like the belief and the ambitions are things that we can build together.

‘I want to see how far I can go and I think Arsenal is the best place to be in. My dream has always been to play in Arsenal, so it’s fantastic.

“Of course, it’s a difference and the first time I’m moving from home and moving abroad. It will be special but also very fun and I think this is an opportunity for me to grow both as a person but also as a football player. I’m excited to come here every day and be better on everything.”

“I think Arsenal is the right place to be if I want to develop and the environment here is great for players to develop. Both individually, to grow as a person and as a player, and also, win titles with ARSENAL. I think that’s every footballer’s dream, to win titles, especially here at Arsenal for me.”

This is a massive move for Smilla to make and one that will hopefully work out for the defender, she will need to work hard as she is now playing for one of the biggest teams in womens football.

Fans will be looking forward to see how the defender develops over the next few months.

MARTINELLI WORKING ON EXIT PLANS?

Here is the latest Arsenal transfer news and rumours, as forward Gabriel Martinelli could reportedly be making plans to leave and join a new club in the summer transfer window.

Over the past few transfer windows, Mikel Arteta has been given the money to spend and sign players that have made a real difference to that squad, so much so, that he now has one of the best in Europe.

But with all the signings that ARSENAL have made over the past few windows, it has meant that players like Martinelli have not got the game time that they would like as Mikel Arteta has a number of players in the side that also deserve to play.

Now, the Caughtoffside website have claimed a Very reliable sources state that Gabriel Martinelli’s representatives are making plans for next season with a different club.

Martinelli was heavily linked with a move away from Arsenal in the summer window, with reports that a move to Saudi Arabia was on the cards, but the Brazilian was not interested in making that move at this stage of his career.

And According to TEAMtalk, ARSENAL are one of the many clubs to have held initial talks with intermediaries over Bradley Barcola to see if they can yet win the crowded race for his signature, as they line-up possible replacements for Martinelli.

IcFootballnews Says…

Martinelli can be one of the most exciting players to watch for Arsenal, his pace and skill can really cause defenders issues, but he also has the ability to have some really poor games and make no impact whatsoever.

The summer is many months away, so anything can change between now and then, but if Martinelli does decide that he wants to leave the Gunners, then we are sure there will be a number of players that can replace the Brazilia.

As we said, ARSENAL have already reportedly made a move to sign Barcola, and he could be a fantastic addition to that attack.
