Charania adds that if Davis is moved to a playoff contender, the return timeline from his injury could allow him to come back during the postseason while establishing himself for the long term elsewhere.

Davis is likely to undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his left hand and could be sidelined for several months.
According to Charania’s report, given the prognosis and the Mavericks’ current direction, Davis’ season is essentially over.
Davis, who has appeared in just 20 games this season, is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, while the Mavericks are currently outside the Play-In spots, sitting 12th in the Western Conference with a 15–25 record.
