Liverpool could still be forced into action in this month’s transfer window, as the Reds face a growing shortage of personnel across several areas of the pitch.
Arne Slot was dealt a blow after learning that defender Conor Bradley is now ruled out for the season following an injury sustained in last week’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal.
While Liverpool extended their unbeaten run against the Gunners, concerns over an injury crisis are mounting. The Reds are short of options both in defence and attack, with centre-back Geovanni Leoni also sidelined for most of the season due to an ACL injury.
In attack, Mohamed Salah remains away at the Africa Cup of Nations representing Egypt, while £125million signing Alexander Isak is also sidelined with an injury.
Slot has additionally had to cope with a minor injury to Hugo Ekitike, who has missed recent matches. The 23-year-old returned from injury on Monday night, playing in Liverpool’s 4-1 FA Cup win over Barnsley.
Borussia Dortmund defender Julian Ryerson has been linked with a potential move to Anfield during the winter transfer window.
The 28-year-old has been in excellent form this season, providing six assists in 22 appearances. Primarily a right-back, Ryerson is versatile enough to play at left-back and centre-back.
However, according to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Ryerson is currently not among Liverpool’s transfer targets, with the club assessing various options for the remainder of the window.
Plettenberg posted on X: “Understand Liverpool are urgently searching for a replacement for Conor #Bradley, who will be out for several months with a knee injury.
“Various options are being assessed for the current transfer window. ❌ Been told that Julian Ryerson is currently not a candidate for #LFC. #BVB.”
The Norwegian has established himself as an undisputed starter in recent seasons. Joe Gomez can provide cover for Bradley, while Jeremie Frimpong could be deployed in defence if Liverpool are unable to sign a replacement.
