Thunder vs. Spurs: The matchup

No team in the NBA has had better fortunes against the league-leading Thunder than the Spurs, who went 3-0 in three head-to-head meetings in December. Those three losses mark nearly half of OKC’s seven total losses this season and cast doubts on the Thunder’s status as runaway favorites to repeat as NBA champs. But Oklahoma City rides a three-game winning streak and still sits atop the Western Conference with its 33-7 record, a full 5.5 games ahead of the second-place Spurs.

San Antonio has made a big collective leap this season with superstar Victor Wembanyama back in the fold along with a deep nucleus of young talent. The Spurs have played to mixed results with Wembanyama in and out of their lineup since beating the Thunder in back-to-back games on Dec. 23 and 25, going 4-5 over their past nine games while also beating a trio of contenders in the Knicks, Lakers and Celtics over that same stretch.
