Newcastle United were handed a lifeline in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City, with the visiting side seeing a goal ruled out after a long VAR check.

Antoine Semenyo gave City the lead early in the second half and thought he had doubled his side's lead in the 63rd minute when he back-heeled a corner into the net.

The game was however halted by a VAR check for offside. The check took six minutes, and involved referee Chris Kavanagh going over to the screen to judge a subjective offside.

It was concluded that Erling Haaland was interfering with play by stopping Malick Thiaw from clearing the ball, when in an offside position, leading to the goal being ruled out.

After going to look at the screen, Kavanagh said in his on-pitch announcement: "After review, Manchester City number nine is in an offside position and impacts the ability of the defender. Final decision offside."

The length of the check, which took around six minutes audibly annoyed fans in the stadium, with them showing their discontent by booing as the check was taking place.

The decision was described by Sky Sports co-commentator Chris Sutton as 'incredible'.

"I've got to tell you, I think the game's gone. Is he really going to stop that Thiaw?" he said. "You think the distance from Semenyo...a yard, a yard-and-a-half. Thiaw's not going to react to that."

"That's just a sheer guess from the referee."

The announcement by the referee was greeted by a huge cheer from the St James' Park faithful, with Eddie Howe instantly responding by making substitutions.

Sandro Tonali replaced Jacob Ramsey, while Anthony Elanga and Nick Woltemade came on for Anthony Gordon and Yoane Wissa as the Magpies looked for the equaliser.

Newcastle did however find themselves two goals down before the full-time whistle. In the 99th minutes Rayan Cherki put City in control of the tie.

The decision to rule out Semenyo's second goal could however still be a crucial one for Newcastle, with the second leg still to come. That takes place at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, 4 February as Howe's men look to book their place back at Wembley Stadium.
