Jose Mourinho's prediction about£60m'phenomenon'now on Chelsea's radar has come true

If Chelsea are going to enter the January transfer window and bolster Liam Rosenior’s squad, it is likely to be for a new goalkeeper or additions in the middle of the defence.

Chelsea are well-stocked in midfield, boast plenty of attacking midfielders and wingers and have three strikers currently. Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Marc Guiu, who Joe Hart thinks is perfect for Liam Rosenior.

Back-up at right-back could be a consideration with Malo Gusto and Reece James currently doubts, but Jorrel Hato and Marc Cucurella are excellent options on the left. Chelsea lack at centre-back and in goal.

Tosin has enjoyed a solid couple of games under the watchful eye of Rosenior, but Trevoh Chalobah was poor at Fulham and Pat Nevin said Benoit Badiashile looked largely out of his comfort zone at Charlton.

But in goal, Chelsea really lack a goalkeeper that can take them into a Premier League title race and in the hunt for trophies. Robert Sanchez is good, but he has a clanger in him and his kicking is particularly bad.

Jose Mourinho is a big fan of £60m star on Chelsea shortlist

Mike Maignan has been linked with Chelsea for a while but there is a new keeper on the radar, and it is another currently residing in Italy. Chelsea are battling Tottenham and Man United for Roma’s Mile Svilar.

Reports in Italy claim Belgium-born Serbia international Svilar is rated at £60m. With Milan looking to extend Maignan’s contract, Svilar has been added to Chelsea’s list, and Jose Mourinho is a massive fan.

After a teenage Svilar made a mistake for Benfica against Mourinho’s Man United in 2017, Mourinho leapt to Svilar’s defence, describing him as a “phenomenon” and predicting he’d cost a lot of money.

“He is a phenomenon, he is amazing. Only great goalkeepers suffer goals like this. Either Benfica has a top goalkeeper for years, or the president should prepare a big suitcase (for the money),” Mourinho said.

“Only top keepers concede these goals. Because bad keepers stay on their line; bad keepers don’t come out for crosses; bad keepers don’t try to analyse the game. I knew before – this keeper is phenomenal.”

What Roma’s current manager said about Mile Svilar

Svilar has become a key part of this Roma side, having joined the club from Benfica, even if he remains young in goalkeeping terms. At 26, Svilar would be a sensational signing if Chelsea could get him.

Gian Piero Gasperini, who became Roma manager in the summer after a long stint as Atalanta gaffer, believes he is one of the best goalkeepers in Europe: “Svilar? He’s definitely one of the best in Europe.

“He scored a lot of points last year and several more this year. I compare him to a striker who scores 25 goals,” Gasperini continued earlier this season, on Roma’s Svilar. The goalkeeper’s stock is very high.

A January move feels incredibly unlikely but a deal at the end of the season, if Chelsea can fork out £60m – something we’ve seen time after time – then it feels realistic. Certainly, it fits the Todd Boehly mould.
