Newcastle United have it all to do at the Etihad Stadium after blowing home advantage at St James' Park.
In a drab first half, Newcastle and City went in goal-less at half-time with neither side able to manage a shot on target. Man City went ahead when Jeremy Doku crossed into the area with Bernardo Silva helping the ball on before Antoine Semenyo swept home.
City were denied a second Semenyo goal when Erling Haaland was ruled offside just after the hour mark and Newcastle rallied well enough. But while the Magpies had openings, they did not pressure James Trafford enough.
Both Yoane Wissa and Bruno Guimaraes had chances to open the scoring before City went ahead. As Newcastle tried to grab possession back from City in the closing stages, Rayan Cherki doubled the lead in the 98th minute,
Here's how United fared:
Nick Pope 6
A mixed bag with some key saves and some shaky moments.
Lewis Miley 7
Continues to play above expectations. Tried in vain to unlock City.
Malick Thiaw 6
Faded after a decent start.
Sven Botman 7
A sturdy display but went missing for the second goal.
Lewis Hall 8
The clear winner of the man of the match award. Looked unshakable and caused City problems.
Joelinton 6
Rattled by Man City and on thin ice after yellow card. Battled away.
Bruno Guimaraes 6
A game too far. Unfortunate to see his shot bounce off the post.
Jacob Ramsey 7
A much better display as he put in a committed performance in midfield.
Anthony Gordon 6
Had some impact but did not look capable of hurting Man City enough. He had 25 touches before his number came up.
Jacob Murphy 7
Looked lively and looked to provide with four crosses before going off with injury in a crushing first-half blow.
Yoane Wissa 5
Missed a presentable opportunity early on, but was unfortunate with a header after the break. Managed just 11 touches.
Subs
