Report: Pistons 'internally' discussed potential Michael Porter Jr. trade

Per Jake Fischer, the Pistons had internal talks about the Brooklyn Nets star.

As many continue to monitor what might unfold for Michael Porter Jr. before the Feb. 5 trade deadline, the Detroit Pistons have been constantly mentioned as an interesting team that can land the star forward.

Brooklyn Nets / Schedule

Out of this, NBA insider Jake Fischer revealed that the Pistons have actually talked internally about a potential pursuit of the rising Brooklyn Nets forward.

"I have not been told yet that Detroit has called on Michael Porter Jr., but I have been told that they have at least discussed him internally," Fischer said, "And I think that makes a ton of sense because, as good as the Pistons are leading the Eastern Conference wire-to-wire here, they do not have a bona fide second scorer behind Cade Cunningham."

The Nets' continued rebuild plans this season have been a key factor in the trade rumors around Porter Jr., who is averaging a career-high 25.9 points, 7.5 boards and 3.4 assists this season.

Apparently, recent reports suggest that Brooklyn is mulling over moving Porter Jr. next month and would like to keep him at least until the NBA Draft day in the offseason.

The Pistons (28-10) have been a major revelation this season as the current No. 1 team in the East behind budding superstar Cade Cunningham, but it'll be interesting to anticipate if they can keep their momentum over any other Conference contender as they aim for title contention.

It remains to be seen if the Pistons will advance from internal talks and formally pursue Porter Jr. for an added impact scorer.

"I think Michael Porter Jr. could be that guy," Fischer added. "He is not an Anthony Davis or a Lauri Markkanen, who is going to cost you an arm and a leg in years of draft capital and also be on the books for $50–$60 million moving forward. He's only 27 right now, and I don't think he's in a position to be commanding $50–$60 million going forward."
