From Italy: Federico Chiesa makes big play to leave Anfield

Juventus’ pursuit of Federico Chiesa has been one of the January window’s most persistent sagas, but until now, the Old Lady has failed to meet Liverpool’s non-negotiable demands for the struggling Italian winger. The Bianconeri initially approached the Reds with a straightforward loan proposal featuring an option to buy—a structure that was swiftly dismissed at Anfield.

Liverpool’s position remains crystal clear: any departure must involve a permanent transfer with a significant fee attached, ideally the €12 million they invested when signing Chiesa from Juventus just 18 months ago.

The reigning Premier League champions have maintained firm resistance to a temporary deal, particularly given their precarious attacking depth. With Alexander Isak sidelined until at least March following a broken fibula and Hugo Ekitike only recently recovered from a hamstring complaint, Liverpool cannot afford to weaken their forward line without securing a suitable replacement first. James Pearce of The Athletic confirmed Liverpool’s two-pronged condition: a serious permanent offer on the table and a replacement lined up before any Chiesa exit could be sanctioned.

But now in a development that could prove decisive, Chiesa has reportedly taken matters into his own hands by offering to facilitate the move back to Turin through financial sacrifice. According to Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, the 28-year-old has informed Juventus that he is willing to reduce his current €6 million-per-year salary – approximately £120,000 per week – to help the two clubs reach an agreement. The gesture represents what the Italian press has described as “an important and not obvious step,” with Chiesa essentially telling Juventus that his contract won’t be an issue if the two clubs can find an agreement.

With just 529 minutes across 21 appearances this season under Arne Slot—including only one Premier League start—Chiesa is desperate for regular football ahead of the 2026 World Cup, where current Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso has already hinted that a return to Serie A would boost his international prospects.
