Ben White would jump at the chance to join Liverpool if they came knocking, according to Danny Murphy, with the defender's Arsenal future becoming increasingly unclear.

The versatile star has been a crucial part of the Gunners’ development under Mikel Arteta having joined from Brighton for £50million several years ago. He was pushed out to right-back following the emergence of William Saliba, but he has been reduced to a bit-part role over the past year.

White finds himself out of the starting XI, in part owing to a serious knee injury, but also with Jurrien Timber showing such sensational form. It means the England international has struggled for game time anywhere in the backline.

Despite Arsenal wanting to retain the ex-Brighton defender there is talk of him seeking a challenge elsewhere with Liverpool touted as a possible location. They are assessing their backline options, especially with Ibrahima Konate's contract winding down, and could offer more minutes.

Murphy told BoyleSports: "Ben White to Liverpool would make sense but Arsenal might not want to sell to a rival. It would depend on how adamant the player is that he wants to go. If Ben White was an option, I think that would be a good option for Liverpool.

"I think he’s a really good footballer, he’s a big lad. Yes, he’s had a couple of injury problems recently, but he’s an experienced guy, he’s played a lot of games and he can play centre-back and right-back.

"I wouldn’t see why if Liverpool were keen, then why he wouldn’t try and force that move, having said that I’d find it strange to think that Arsenal would let him go. Or they might just think they’re too far ahead of Liverpool anyway, so we’ll have to see how that plays out."

Liverpool's Merseyside rivals Everton too have been credited with interest, but a move to Anfield would provide White with the chance to challenge for honours. The defender is looking to reignite his international career, which stalled when Gareth Southgate was in charge.

Arsenal's recruitment drive over the summer saw a number of new defenders arrive, further increasing the competition for White. Piero Hinacpie and Cristhian Mosquera both arrived at the Emirates and as things stand White has only started four times in the Premier League.
