Three Real Madrid players Xabi Alonso could bring to Liverpool if he replaces Arne Slot - opinion

Xabi Alonso becoming the next Liverpool manager has once again been mooted following his Real Madrid exit.

Alonso was linked to Liverpool at the back end of 2025 amid Arne Slot’s side struggling, and talk about the Spaniard leaving Los Blancos was heating up.

Now, after a defeat to FC Barcelona over the weekend, the former midfielder has left his role at Real Madrid.

Should that happen, there are a few players he may wish to bring to Anfield with him.

Rodrygo

It was reported in December that Liverpool have a four-man attacking shortlist and the Brazilian was on it.

Since then, it emerged that Rodrygo is ready to leave Real Madrid and was changing agencies ahead of a potential transfer.

With Mohamed Salah’s future beyond 2026 uncertain, Liverpool will need to start thinking about long-term replacements.

The 25-year-old could be a great option, having shone at the highest level, winning countless trophies for many years now.

Eduardo Camavinga

Similarly, Liverpool have already been linked with a move for Eduardo Camavinga.

It’s thought that Camavinga would cost around £52m, which, for a player of his quality in today’s market, is very fair.

At present, the Reds have very few defensive midfield options, with Wataru Endo hardly ever featuring under Slot prior to his injury.

That role has instead fallen to Ryan Gravenberch and Curtis Jones, the latter of whom has caused debate among Liverpool fans with recent performances.

David Alaba

David Alaba is currently due to become a free agent when his Madrid contract expires at the end of June.

Now 33, he would not be a long-term option for Liverpool if he were to sign in the summer.

However, the Reds’ backline has been shaky this season and also lacks any depth.

Alaba would bring a wealth of experience and versatility to Anfield, able to fill in at left-back, potentially as cover for Andy Robertson should he leave in the summer.

The fee involved in bringing the defender to Liverpool, which would just be a signing-on bonus plus wages and agent fees, could make him a very attractive proposition, given that at least two new centre-backs are likely needed this summer.
