Liverpool star 'willing to reduce £5.2 million salary' to complete Anfield departure - report

Liverpool transfer news as Federico Chiesa continues to be linked with a return to Juventus.

Federico Chiesa is reportedly willing to take a pay cut to complete a Liverpool exit.

The forward’s future has come under speculation during the January transfer window. Since joining the Reds from Juventus in August 2024, Chiesa has been well down the pecking order and has started only two Premier League matches.

This term, he’s found Mo Salah, Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz preferred in attack. Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez - sold to Bayern Munich and Al-Hilal respectively - were used ahead of Chiesa last season as Liverpool won the Premier League crown.

With the World Cup taking place this year, Chiesa may harbour ambitions of earning a spot in Italy’s squad should they qualify. And Gazzetta dello Sportclaims that Chiesa was to experience ‘a new era with Juventus’ under head coach Luciano Spalletti. It is suggested that the ex-Fiorentina man earns around £5.2 million per year at Liverpool but he is willing to ‘reduce’ his salary to return to the Bianconeri.

However, there could be difficulty when it comes to agreeing a deal with Liverpool. The Reds are currently short of attacking options, with Alexander Isak recovering from a broken leg while Mo Salah is representing Egypt at the African Cup of Nations. The season-ending injury to Conor Bradley means that Jeremie Frimpong is primarily regarded as a right-back, having impressed further forward in recent weeks. In addition, Hugo Ekitike has only just recovered from a hamstring issue and Rio Ngumoha is just aged 17.

Juve want a loan deal but Liverpool are ‘firm in their position’ and would only accept a permanent departure. They want to recoup the £10 million fee that they paid for Chiesa 18 months ago. It’s said that discussions between the two clubs have been ongoing for ‘at least 10 days to find a compromise’. The Old Lady hope that Liverpool will agree to a loan with an obligation to buy based on appearances and results.
