Tyler Morton admits he still has a huge amount of affection for Hull City, more than 18 months after his loan spell from Liverpool came to an end, with the player desperate for the Tigers to seal promotion.

Morton is plying his trade in Ligue 1 with French giants Lyon after leaving Anfield last summer. He made quite an impression during the 2023/24 season when he played 41 times for the Tigers under Liam Rosenior, and still keeps close tabs on events at the MKM Stadium.

That squad, which featured Morton, Jacob Greaves, Jean Michael Seri, Jaden Philogene, Liam Delap and Fabio Carvalho, narrowly missed out on the Championship's top six and was then broken up that summer, with all those players leaving, along with Rosenior, who has since taken over at Chelsea.

Morton quickly became a firm fan favourite at the MKM Stadium with his dynamic performances from midfield, and he says those days were when he was happiest.

“I finished my spell at Blackburn with a broken foot. I wanted to recover quickly because I wanted to go straight back out on loan, because that is where I felt like I was developing most. Seeing the Hull City side and speaking to the manager, there was nowhere else I was thinking of going,” Morton told The Tiger.

“I said to my agent straight away that I feel that is the place for me, and being so late in the window, I was really fortunate that Hull City waited for me as a club. It is one of the best decisions I have ever made to this day, to go to Hull City, because that is where I felt I developed as a player more than anything. My favourite season in football was at Hull City.

"It was a fantastic moment being able to go to that club and play in front of fans that are incredibly positive, and they deserve what they are getting right now, and hopefully, and I am praying, they can get themselves in the play-offs and get promotion this season."

One of his best weeks of that season saw him claim an assist and his first City goal, as well as making his England Under-21 debut in a 3-0 win over Northern Ireland.

That comfortable victory came across Stanley Park at Everton's Goodison Park, and saw him bag a goal playing in the same team alongside City teammates Delap and Philogene, with him capping a fine week with a goal in the 4-1 thumping of Rotherham United.

“It was crazy for me that week," he continued. "It was really enjoyable, and I will remember it for the rest of my life, because it was my senior goal, which I had been waiting for. The manager let me go a bit higher and let me attack more, and I scored, and I had done the exact same for England. It was a real boost in confidence to go on and get myself in the box to create, and it was incredible. To then score my first goal at the MKM was an amazing feeling as well, against Rotherham. You could see the passion in my celebration!”

“The fans were really positive, and they really enjoyed watching Hull City play. We played some incredible football and it was a really good footballing season. Hopefully, the fans enjoyed it that season. I know that we couldn’t do it, but it was an incredible season and I loved it.

“To have fans so positive and really wanting you to do well is an amazing thing as a footballer, because it gives you so much confidence and it just allows you to be yourself and enjoy your football. Me and my family love the club. We love everything about Hull City and we were very grateful for the fans, the staff and the players for that season.

"I miss Hull quite a lot, to be honest, the lads especially and the club, as I felt really at home there as well. It was an amazing, amazing club and I have found that here (at Lyon) as well, so I have been very fortunate and I am really enjoying it.”
