Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has discussed being told that the Reds were considering a last-minute move for Antoine Semenyo, prior to him joining Manchester City.
Semenyo has sealed a move to City from Bournemouth in the January transfer window, scoring in both of his first two appearances for the club.
Liverpool were mentioned as an option for the Ghanaian, but in the end, he saw the Etihad as his ideal destination to kick on in his career.
Speaking live on Sky Sports on Tuesday evening [via Empire of the Kop], Redknapp explained how his dad, Harry Redknapp, wrongly told him that the Reds were signing Semenyo last weekend:
“I heard there was going to be a twist, and there wasn’t! I’m not going to lie, sometimes you get information from people, and you expect better.
“On this occasion, my dad called me. He was at that game at Bournemouth when Semenyo scored that incredible goal [v Spurs last week], and he said, ‘I think there might be a twist and he might be going to Liverpool’. I thought, ‘I’m going to say that on air!’
“I thought I had turned into Fabrizio Romano for five seconds, and I got it completely wrong.”
A shame for Liverpool to miss out on Semenyo
Semenyo has made an ominous start to life at City, certainly in terms of their rivals jealously watching him, and he would have been a fantastic addition for Liverpool.
The 25-year-old would have felt like an upgrade on Cody Gakpo, with all due respect to the Dutchman, adding pace, power and end product in the attacking third.
Semenyo has already scored 10 goals in 20 Premier League appearances this season, as well as netting once apiece in the FA Cup and EFL Cup, and that number will likely only grow significantly between now and May.
Liverpool still need to be targeting a left winger in 2026, with a transfer feeling more likely in the summer window, at the same time hoping Semenyo doesn’t develop into a world-class player at City.
