Journalist Claims Chelsea Are“Interested”In Making Surprise Move For Unsettled West Ham Player

Chelsea could challenge Flamengo in the race to sign West Ham attacking midfielder Lucas Paqueta, according to journalist Renan Moura

The Radio Globo sports commentator posted on his X account that the Blues are “interested” in recruiting the 28-year-old if he decides to stay in Europe.

Paqueta is reportedly keen to return to former club Flamengo, having already agreed personal terms, but there are doubts over whether a transfer fee can be agreed.

It has been suggested that West Ham want in excess of €40m (£35m) for the midfielder, and that could lead to the move collapsing.

Why are Chelsea involved?

Moura claims that Paqueta is hoping to leave the UK, having felt that he was poorly treated by the FA after being accused of spotfixing. He was eventually cleared of wrongdoing but he is seeking a fresh start.

While the player is said to be prioritising a return to Brazil, there are those among his entourage who believe he still has a career in Europe. An offer from Chelsea could become attractive if the Flamengo transfer doesn’t pan out.

Other Premier League teams have shown an interest in Paqueta in past transfer windows, including Aston Villa and Tottenham, and it remains to be seen whether either of those two clubs will get involved.

Why a bid for Paqueta is unlikely

While the club’s recruitment team are believed to be in the market for a central midfielder, it was assumed that any reinforcements would arrive in the summer, rather than in January.

In addition, Chelsea don’t generally pay sizeable sums for players over the age of 25. With Paqueta turning 29 at the start of next season, you can’t see an offer being tabled unless they can secure his services very cheaply.
