Inter Milan agree deal for defender scouted by Liverpool

Liverpool supporters hoping for reinforcements during the January transfer window appear set for disappointment, with the Reds planning a remarkably quiet month despite mounting injury concerns that have left Arne Slot’s squad stretched perilously thin. The Athletic has confirmed that “club sources have indicated there will not be a flurry of activity in January,” with Liverpool expected to stick with their current options rather than pursue short-term solutions.

However, this cautious strategy has now resulted in the club missing out on a young defender they had specifically identified during recent scouting missions.

Inter Milan are now advancing rapidly in their pursuit of 18-year-old Hajduk Split centre-back Branimir Mlačić, a player Liverpool’s recruitment team had shortlisted just weeks ago. The Reds dispatched scouting officials to the HNK Rijeka versus Hajduk Split fixture in Decemeber last year, joining a notable gathering of European clubs including AC Milan, Parma, Sassuolo, and FC Twente.

According to Croation outlet Sportske Novisti, Anfield representatives were specifically monitoring Mlačić, who has emerged as one of Croatia’s most promising defensive prospects despite being just 18 years old.

However, while Liverpool identified the talent, it is Inter Milan who have moved decisively to secure his signature.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Inter Milan has agreed a €5 million transfer package with Hajduk Split over, with the young defender set to travel to Milan for medical examinations before likely returning to Croatia on loan for the remainder of the season.
