Hugo Ekitike joins Liverpool legend in history books with feat not achieved for 48 years

Hugo Ekitike has shone since he secured a summer transfer to Liverpool from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt.

Alexander Isak was the marquee centre-forward signing of the summer, arriving at Anfield for a British record fee.

However, the Swede has been hampered by form and fitness issues, while his counterpart has shone.

Hugo Ekitike matches Kenny Dalglish’s record

Liverpool were not great against the League One side, and the scoreline was pretty flattering.

They scored two late goals via substitutes Florian Wirtz and Ekitike to see out the tie and book a meeting with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Now, after finding the back of the net this week, the former Frankfurt ace has joined Kenny Dalglish in the Liverpool history books.

Hugo Ekitike comparison with great Liverpool strikers

As well as matching Dalglish, the number nine has been mentioned in the same breath as some top players since his move.

Fans have compared Ekitike to Fernando Torres, who enjoyed a prolific spell at Liverpool before his ill-fated Chelsea switch.

Elsewhere, comparisons to Ian Rush, who is Liverpool’s all-time top goalscorer, emerged via Tony Cascarino in December.

He said: “I’ve always said the benchmark for work-rate and closing down defenders was always Ian Rush.

“Many other managers of my era would say ‘look how hard Ian Rush works’ and Ekitike has got that in him.”
