Chelsea approach the Carabao Cup semi final first leg against Arsenal with momentum, but also with hesitation. A 5-1 FA Cup win over Charlton offered confidence and control, yet the real test arrives under the lights at Stamford Bridge, where fine margins and availability will dictate the shape of the night.
Late decisions dominate selection thinking
Head coach Liam Rosenior confirmed that Cole Palmer, Reece James and Malo Gusto will all be assessed late after missing the FA Cup tie as a precaution. The trio were rested following “small knocks” picked up against Fulham, with Rosenior keen to manage risk rather than react to it.

“We had no injury problems coming out of Charlton game, which was a really good thing,” Rosenior said.

“I’ll make a decision on Cole, Reece and Malo tomorrow [Tuesday]. They’re being managed.
“It was a good time for them to rest in the FA Cup game. There’s no point taking risks when you feel you can win the game [without them].”
The tone was calm, but the stakes are obvious. Palmer in particular has become central to Chelsea’s attacking rhythm, and his inclusion would shape how ambitious the Blues can be in the first leg.

Suspension forces midfield rethink
Chelsea will definitely be without Moises Caicedo, suspended after picking up a second yellow card in the competition during December’s quarter final win at Cardiff. His absence is notable, especially given he was sent off in the last meeting with Arsenal and will now serve his third suspension of the season.

There is relief elsewhere, with Marc Cucurella available again after serving a one match ban.
Wide roles and balance up front
On the left, Rosenior has options. Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens both started at Charlton, but there is a sense Pedro Neto may be preferred for this level of contest. The rest of the side largely picks itself if Palmer is passed fit.
