What Danny Murphy 'actually' thinks about Liverpool getting rid of Arne Slot

Liverpool’s recent unbeaten run hasn’t taken the notion of sacking Arne Slot out of people’s heads.

Especially now that club legend Xabi Alonso available for hire, the idea of Liverpool making a mid-season change is tempting to some.

David Lynch claims an interim manager to replace Slot is on the table, but only if the Dutchman goes on another losing run.

As it stands, it’s hard to picture such drastic measures being taken, and it’s not something most pundits agree with.

Danny Murphy the latest to back Arne Slot amid sacking suggestions

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy was asked about Slot after the news of Alonso’s departure from Real Madrid.

He thinks that although it was bleak times at Anfield for a while, the recent turnaround in results is enough to secure the manager until at least the end of the season.

Appearing on talkSPORT on Wednesday, Murphy was asked whether FSG would be looking at the Alonso situation.

He responded: “Yeah, because that’s what you should be doing, always keeping an eye and abreast of what’s going on around you, all across Europe if you’re a big club, ready for a contingency if something bad happens.

“But Slots actually recovered from the poor, poor spell quite well. I wouldn’t say they’ve been playing brilliantly, but with the injuries they’ve got and the problems they’ve had, to be on a good 10-game unbeaten run, maybe 11, I think they’ve stabilised.

“He’s done all right. Um, he needs to have a good second half of the season, but I wouldn’t think there’s any drastic thoughts of the hierarchy to think, right, we might be losing him.”

Is winning the FA Cup enough to keep Arne Slot in a job beyond 2025/26? If not, why? 🤔

Murphy is just the latest. Simon Jordan came out in support of Slot the day before, and Gary Lineker was against Alonso replacing him as well.

Liverpool don’t rush decisions

Whether you agree with it or not, Liverpool — especially under FSG — aren’t a club to make snap decisions that will have long-term consequences, like a Chelsea or a Real Madrid for that matter.

It’s one reason why recruitment has been so effective. No short-term fixes, just sustainable growth in every move made.

Now, if Slot were to start losing regularly again, no manager is immune to the boot these days.

But Liverpool are on the right trajectory. If the owners come out in the next few weeks saying they are parting ways with Slot — without a crisis of results — I’ll eat my hat.
