Liverpool supporters have been here far too many times before. Every transfer window seems to bring a fresh carousel of “defensive targets”, briefings about long‑term plans at the back, and endless YouTube compilations of centre‑backs who never actually arrive. As January rumbles on, the conversation has inevitably circled back to one familiar name: Marc Guéhi.
The Crystal Palace defender has been linked with Anfield for what feels like years, and the latest round of reports has only added to the sense of déjà vu. Fees, wage demands and competition from rival clubs are all being recycled, while Liverpool’s existing defensive issues remain very real in the here and now. However, a Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany has reported that Wolfsburg are looking at a potential winter deal for Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell. Earlier this month, reports from France asserted that both Liverpool and Newcastle United are keen on the 23-year-old English defender. The French report suggested that his strength in duels and dominance in the air make him an attractive proposition for English clubs seeking Premier League-ready defenders.
However, it looks like Wolfsburg are trying to steal a march on rivals, with Plettenberg reporting:
“VfL Wolfsburg are now exploring a winter deal for Charlie Cresswell. Concrete negotiations are ongoing. The 23-year-old centre-back is under contract with Toulouse until 2028. No clearance from Brentford for Kristoffer Ajer. No developments yet regarding Danilho Doekhi. The focus is now on Cresswell.”
