Liverpool have been linked with a shocking but sensational loan move
The footballing legend is now 38 and entering the latter stages of his career. After spending the majority of his career with Barcelona, he took on a new challenge with Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, before his mega move to Inter Miami two years later.
With the MLS now in its off-season, Messi has been linked with a move that would write whoever signs him into the history books.
Liverpool linked with sensational Lionel Messi transfer
A ‘specific and clearly defined loan deal’ would be the offer on the table but even saying it out loud sounds too good to be true. But reports continue to suggest Liverpool and others are pushing to bring the great Lionel Messi to England.
Manchester City are also in the fold, named as the favourites to sign the legendary forward and reunite him with former manager Pep Guardiola. They have especially been mentioned as they are likely the ‘most capable’ of paying Messi-style wages, says Football Insider.
Lionel Messi would further unlock Florian Wirtz ability
Messi has played across the full front three during his glittering career and his phenomenal record at Barcelona speaks for itself. The Argentine has 975 goal-scoring contributions in 778 appearances - 672 of those were goals, making him the club’s all-time top scorer.
While his goal tally is significantly superior, you cannot ignore Messi’s ability to assist either. He has 382 career assists, showing his creative play is something rivals fear alongside his ability to finish things off.
Messi’s preferred position is on the right-wing, which is technically a spot up for grabs at Liverpool at the moment. Even when Mohamed Salah returns from AFCON, his inconsistent form this season has forced him to fight for his place.
Florian Wirtz has started to settle into things at Liverpool, following a barrage of criticism as his debut goal continued to evade him. After a slow start, the versatile midfielder has three goals in his last five appearances. Arne Slot has also been experimenting with his role within the team, playing him at left-wing on six occasions and up front as recent as the Arsenal game due to centre-forward absences.
Last season, Messi notched a combined 69 goal-scoring contributions in all competitions for Inter Miami - 43 goals and 26 assists. Even at 38 years of age, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is still an absolute nightmare for defenders and any club would benefit from his impressive ability to score and create goals.
Messi would boost any teammate’s numbers but Wirtz in particular would benefit from having such a force supporting him. The German is already starting to show the talent that attracted Liverpool to him over the summer, and bringing in a creative machine will only increase his output.
