All you need to know as campaigners 'can't support' Hillsborough Law after PM meeting

Campaigners have withdrawn support for the Hillsborough Law in its current form after talks with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer ended without agreement.

The dispute centres on a government amendment creating a "carve-out" for intelligence and security services. This would effectively exempt organisations like MI5 from the duty of candour, meaning the head of that service could decide when information should or should not be revealed.

Families of the Hillsborough disaster victims, the Manchester Arena attack and other tragedies say the exemption would allow cover-ups to continue and fails to ensure full accountability.

Labour MPs, including Hillsborough survivor Ian Byrne, have warned they may vote against the Bill unless the carve-out is removed, despite long campaigning for the law.

Sir Keir Starmer insists the amendments do not weaken the Bill and strike the right balance with national security, but families and campaigners strongly disagree and say the law must apply equally to all public bodies.
