Klay Thompson to join Lakers in a potential move out of Mavs, per report

Thompson will join the Lakers should he and the Mavs reach a buyout agreement.

At some point, Klay Thompson might finally find himself wearing a Los Angeles Lakers uniform.

Los Angeles Lakers / Schedule

Per John Ireland of ESPN Los Angeles, the Lakers will be the first team that Thompson's agent will call should the Dallas Mavericks decide on a buyout agreement.

The Mavericks are standing in an embattled situation this season. From Anthony Davis' brutal hand injury and trade rumors to the continued wait on Kyrie Irving's return from ACL rehab, Dallas has found itself in a problematic spot with a 15-25 record.

Should their mediocrity continue, chances are high that the Mavs will finally commit to reigning No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and build a future contending group around him.

In 2024 free agency, it was reported that the Lakers had prepared a four-year contract offer worth nearly $80 million to Thompson. But the former NBA star decided to take the lesser three-year, $50 million sign-and-trade deal with the Mavericks, as he was fully convinced about the stronger title-contending odds of Dallas with Luka Doncic at the front.

Eventually, Thompson was completely blindsided as a few months later, Doncic was dealt to Los Angeles in what has been the most stunning trade in NBA history.

In a potential breakup with the Mavs, Thompson has a chance to reconnect with the Lakers. He has significant ties with the franchise as his father, Mychal, won two titles with the Lakers and currently serves as the team's radio color commentator.

Although he's no longer that deadly shooter anymore, Thompson will still be a key potential piece to add for the Lakers. He is averaging 11.4 points and 2.5 boards in 37 games this season.
