Is a move to Italy on the cards for a forgotten Manchester City goalkeeper?

Goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has become the forgotten man at Manchester City this season. The arrivals of Gianluigi Donnarumma, James Trafford, and Marcus Bettinelli at the Etihad have seen Ortega not feature at all for City this season. The German goalkeeper has become Manchester City’s fourth-choice keeper, and he is far too good a player to remain in that role. A new report indicates that Serie A club Genoa has an interest in signing Stefan Ortega in the January transfer window as they look to sign a goalkeeper. That could be the ideal move for Ortega, who deserves the opportunity to be the number-one goalkeeper somewhere.

Genoa are reportedly interested on signing Stefan Ortega from Manchester City this month.

Susy Campanale has relayed reports from Sport Media Set and Calciomercato.com for Football Italia that Genoa are interested in signing Manchester City’s forgotten goalkeeper Stefan Ortega this month. Furthermore, Campanale reports that Genoa’s move to sign goalkeeper Bento from Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr fell through after Al-Nassr refused to release the player. This has seen them shift their focus to a potential move for Stefan Ortega. Campanale further reports that with Stefan Ortega’s contract set to expire at the end of this season, Genoa could sign Ortega for a minimal transfer fee this month.

Stefan Ortega deserves an opportunity to be the number-one goalkeeper somewhere.

It is a shame to see Stefan Ortega slip down the pecking order at Manchester City. During his time at the club, he made a tremendous contribution. Ortega’s heroics in a crucial 2-0 win for Manchester City over Tottenham at the back end of the 23/24 season were crucial to City winning a fourth consecutive Premier League title. Ortega was always ready to perform in goal when called upon. He spent most of his time at City as a backup to Ederson, but to his credit, he was always ready when called upon. This season he hasn’t featured for City as his City career winds down.

Stefan Ortega deserves to be a number-one goalkeeper somewhere. Perhaps an opportunity has opened up for him. Genoa are 15th in Serie A and appear eager to sign a goalkeeper. Perhaps that is a role Ortega could fill. That may be the perfect opportunity for him to become a number-one goalkeeper. He will not get that opportunity at City, and Ortega is too good to just see out the final months of his contract on the periphery of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

It remains to be seen if Genoa move to sign Stefan Ortega this month. Ortega should be a first-choice goalkeeper somewhere, so perhaps a move to Italy will give him that opportunity if it arises. Whether or not it does remains to be seen, but surely Ortega wants to play. Or, perhaps he is happy to see out the remainder of his City contract. That also could be the case.
