Sam Allardyce names winger sold by Jurgen Klopp who Liverpool should re-sign

The winger sees his Fulham contract expire at the end of the season and has been backed to join Liverpool.

Sam Allardyce has suggested that Liverpool should look to re-sign an academy product they sold.

Harry Wilson is coming towards the end of his Fulham contract. The 28-year-old came through the academy ranks at Liverpool, joining the club aged eight. But Wilson struggled to make a first-team breakthrough and made only two first-team appearances.

He had loans at Crewe, Hull City, Derby County, AFC Bournemouth, Cardiff City and Fulham before he joined the latter on a permanent basis in 2021. Wilson has been a key player at Craven Cottage, helping them establish their Premier League status.

This campaign, the Wales international has been in rampant form. He has plundered eight goals and five assists in 24 appearances for the West London outfit. One of his efforts came in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool, while he notched the winner in a 2-1 derby victory over Chelsea.

What’s been said

With Wilson’s Fulham deal expiring in June, he is likely to have several suitors. And Allardyce has suggested that it would be ‘great’ if he returned to Anfield and displayed his quality.

Speaking on the podcast No Tippy Tappy Football, former England, Newcastle United and West Ham manager Allardyce said: “I won’t be surprised if he’s already getting calls from other clubs already. No doubt about that. Especially when he’s free.

“He’s experienced Liverpool, and they ended up moving him on, so to go back to a bigger club than Fulham, returning to Liverpool for example, it’ll be great to see if he can translate that high-quality of play into that team. With better players, he should get even more support and be even better. It’s whether he can handle the pressure of the bigger club.”

Ex-Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen reckons that a ‘big club’ will snap-up Wilson in the summer transfer window. He said: “I’m sure he’ll be on certain clubs' radar. I always look at teams and think, who are the difference makers? He’s one of those difference makers.

“He’s got his wonderful left foot, he’s got an eye for a pass, and the stats clearly show that with the amount of goals he’s scored and the assists he’s had that he’s so important for Fulham. Fulham won’t want to see him leave, but if his contract runs out, he’s now in an ideal situation. A big club can take him for free.”

Would Liverpool re-sign Harry Wilson?

There is no doubt that Wilson has having an incredible season. But his profile may not fit what Liverpool are quite looking for. He is in the peak years of his career and the Reds tend to sign players still on an upward trajectory.
