Celtic and Derby County are monitoring a potential deal for the frozen out Chelsea striker.

Chelsea are working on finding a permanent exit for David Datro Fofana this month with the club keen to get the forgotten striker off the books at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old was bought from Molde in January 2023 with £8.4 million splurged on then rising star, who had scored 22 goals in 39 games across all competitions for the Norwegian side. Fofana was never really given a run of games in the first team at Chelsea with just four appearances for the club.

The striker was instead sent out on loan with spells at Union Berlin, Burnley and Goztepe. Fofana then joined Faith Karagümrük in Turkey for a loan spell this season with no way back into the Chelsea first team. He has seven goals across all competitions in 14 outings this term.

Fofana had been linked with a move to Scottish Premiership giants Celtic last summer but was reported to have snubbed the Glaswegian side in preference of staying closer to home. It appeared that a loan move to Charlton Athletic had been agreed but that collapsed at the final hurdle.

Instead, the player headed to Turkey but it now looks as Chelsea will push him to find a permanent exit this month. With the latest on the deal, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano wrote on Wednesday: “Chelsea and David Datro Fofana are working on a permanent exit this window. Celtic, Royal Antwerp and Derby County all expressed interest over potential deal.”

Fofana can play either as a traditional striker or as a winger. He has never scored for Chelsea but did bag four Premier League goals during his loan spell at Burnley. Celtic sit third in the Premiership as they chase Hearts and Rangers, while Derby County are mid table in the Championship.

In a head-turning interview with Rudy Galetti this month, the forward even apologised to the Blues for never living up to his transfer fee. He said: “To Chelsea and their fans: thank you for believing in me, and I’m sorry I couldn’t give you the version of myself you deserved at that time.

“Today, I’m more grounded. I understand football better, but more importantly, I understand myself better. I’m calmer, more disciplined, and more aware of my responsibilities within a team.”
