Newcastle United failed in two consecutive summers to sign Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford.
Pep Guardiola has left the door open for James Trafford to potentially leave Manchester City this summer.
Signed last year for £27million, Etihad chiefs activated a buy-back option just minutes before the 23-year-old was set to join Newcastle United. Trafford started the season between the sticks but a mistake against Tottenham Hotspur saw Guardiola swiftly move for Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The Italian is one of the world’s best and, at 26, has the capability to dominate the goalkeeping spot for years to come. That has led to uncertainty over Trafford’s future and whether Newcastle could explore a fresh approach.
Pep Guardiola on James Trafford
Trafford was in goal as Man City coasted to a comfortable 2-0 win over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup. While he had little to do, the former Burnley man looked composed and commanded his area well.
Speaking before the game, City boss Guardiola revealed they will assess his future at the end of the season. He told reporters: “We want him and what’s going to happen at the end of the season we will see. I would like him to stay for many years here because he has the attributes to play in a big club like us.”
Eddie Howe wishes James Trafford well
Unsurprisingly, Toon boss Eddie Howe was also asked about the keeper ahead of the contest. He replied: "I think he’s a very good goalkeeper. They (Man City) have probably got more than that, but the two who have been involved this season have been fantastic goalkeepers.
“I don't look at it that way (being bitter about how close Newcastle were). I wish him all the best in his career and, if he plays tomorrow, we will look forward to playing against him."

“That's the aim,” Trafford said about becoming England’s No.1 after signing for Man City. “If I do it, it's brilliant. I know I have to work every day to achieve that because it's hard being anywhere for a decade, let alone the best team in the world.
“There was obviously a decision to make. City were the best option for my career and I obviously believe in myself. I believed this was the right place for me as a goalkeeper.”
