The star guard was on the sideline during Wednesday’s 119-105 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, and former NBA star and Clippers announcer Jim Jackson provided insight into Young’s cautious approach.
“And there’s Trae Young, the newest wizard. And they’re going to monitor his health going forward. I guarantee if this trip was in Utah, he wouldn’t be on the bench… It’s in L.A., so he made sure he made this,” Jackson said.
Jackson’s comments highlight how Young is carefully managing his body as he transitions to a new team. The Wizards brought in Young, hoping he could change their fortunes, but the team will make sure he only steps on the court when it’s safe and strategically beneficial.
During his time with the Atlanta Hawks, Young carried the team offensively, leading them to three playoff appearances including an Eastern Conference finals run in 2021. While his individual performance was always strong, Washington now hopes his arrival can spark a team turnaround.
