Liverpool should have completed the signing of Marc Guehi in the summer but they have been urged to go for him again.

Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer window so far, with Richard Hughes only planning for the long-term rather than addressing any immediate concerns.

Arne Slot, despite spending a record amount of money in the summer, has been desperately short of creativity in recent weeks with a reliance now being placed on Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz’s growing partnership in the final third. If it was hard to justify picking Alexander Isak before, it will be even harder when he returns, if their current form continues.

Liverpool urged to sign Marc Guehi

As one of Slot’s hands has given, another has taken away. The need to shore up the defence has seen freedom and individuality suffer at the other end of the park with Liverpool linked to a host of wingers who could make a difference. Yan Diomande is wanted by most of Europe with Bradley Barcola said to be ready to move on from Paris Saint Germain.

According to Ally McCoist, speaking on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, it isn’t in the forward line where the Reds are short. When asked by Jeff Stelling if Liverpool or Man United have the need for a centre-half, the former Scotland international said: “Yes, they both do. They both do. I think probably, be interesting, what you think, I think Liverpool probably slightly more.

“Somebody got together in the other one next to Van Dijk. And obviously the one with, the immediate one that sprang to mind with Marc Guehi. Again, I mean, that's ideal for, we're sitting here saying that's brilliant for Liverpool yet.

“They got somebody going to play with Van Dijk. Where does that leave Palace? But then at the same time, if they got offered 30, 40 million pounds, whatever it may be for a player who can leave for nothing, I think you've got to take it.”

Is Guehi the best option available for Liverpool

The question is whether or not Ibrahima Konate is going to stay at Liverpool. The France international is now seen as unlikely to extend his stay at Anfield with talks about a new deal starting as far back as 2024.

A reported wage demand of £200,000 per week is clearly one that Liverpool aren’t keen to pay. There is a long-list of Guehi alternates and also of players who are available on potential Bosman deals.

Dayot Upamecano at Bayern Munich is one, with long-standing target Andreas Christensen at Barcelona another who could slot into Liverpool’s starting XI without any problems. As McCoist said though, Guehi remains the obvious name after coming so close in the summer.

If Richard Hughes wants to get fans back on side, losing Guehi to Man City or Bayern wouldn’t go down well, whereas signing him would be exactly the sort of boost that they need in a season that promised a lot, but has delivered little.
