Lewis Koumas is trying to keep his head down and make a first team breakthrough at Birmingham City rather than return to Liverpool this month.

The Wales winger, aged 20, had hoped to kick on and show his potential this season after racking up game time on loan at Stoke City in the Championship last term, his first proper taste of regular senior football.

But instead he has been restricted to just five league starts, with the rest of his 21 appearances coming from the bench.

The door has opened in his favoured left flank position, however, due to an injury for Demarai Gray and he scored against Coventry and had positive reviews in the FA Cup at Cambridge United.

He told BirminghamLive: “Last year I played 49 games and started a big majority of them. It's been a different start this year but whenever I get put in I’m ready to give my best.

“I really like the gaffer. He sees my attributes well. We spoke about it before I came in and I’ve been working hard in training for months and months now, just so I’m ready when I go on the pitch.”

He added: “We’ve obviously had conversations (with Liverpool) but I’m keeping my head down, working hard and we’ll see what happens.”

There are four more Championship matches to play in January and Gray isn’t due to return until February. As it stands, Koumas looks likely to go up against Stoke at St Andrew's on January 24 and he hopes he has turned the corner.

He said: “Getting a goal, especially against a team like Coventry, boosts your confidence instantly. Me being a confidence player, I need that to go and perform freely without any sort of pressure on my back.”
