PSG are keeping tabs on Enzo Fernandez as they consider a move to sign the Chelsea midfielder, who is unsettled following the sacking of Enzo Maresca.

The Italian was shown the door on New Year's Day after 18 months in his role and the ex-Leicester boss had a very positive relationship with his Argentine midfielder, who joined the Blues in 2023 for a then British record transfer of £107million.

Fernandez has admitted he was "sad" to see Maresca given his marching orders, speaking for the first time after he scored a 94th-minute equaliser against Manchester City on January 4.

Liam Rosenior has come in to replace Maresca but French outlet L'Equipe claim the World Cup winner is considering his future at Stamford Bridge and PSG have made him one of their main transfer targets. They are keen to bolster their midfield around key man Vitinha.

It is understood that PSG have made no attempt to sign Fernandez during the January transfer window, viewing him as a longer term target. Mid-season moves after often problematic and the French giants are in no rush to secure their man.

Fellow midfielders Joao Neves and Fabian Ruiz have not hit the level of last season, when they helped inspire the Parisians to treble success which culminated with them winning the Champions League in emphatic fashion.

The French newspaper also details that PSG’s primary aim with their transfer business is to increasing competition within Luis Enrique’s squad. In France there have been concerns that some players have grown too comfortable in the first-team due to the lack of back-up options, which has made it hard for them to be dropped.

A source said: "Not bringing in more competition is a mistake. They should have brought in guys who are eager to prove themselves. Right now, we're seeing players who are playing more casually. The dip in form is in their desire. In the counter-pressing, you can tell it's not quite the same team anymore. There's a lack of ambition to earn their place, players who are too comfortable."

Chelsea spent huge sums to land Fernandez from Benfica and believe his best days are ahead of him. He forms part of a hugely lucrative midfield duo alongside Moises Caicedo and the Blues will consider that the cornerstone of their team going forward.
