Jurgen Klopp has emerged as a candidate to take charge of Real Madrid following Xabi Alonso’s abrupt dismissal on Monday, just one day after the Spanish giants lost 3-2 to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
While Alvaro Arbeloa has been promoted from Real Madrid Castilla to take interim charge, Sky Germany reports that Klopp would “seriously consider” the opportunity at the Bernabeu if the club makes a formal approach in the summer. The former Liverpool manager, who currently serves as head of global soccer for Red Bull after leaving Anfield in 2024, remains a coveted figure despite his long-term contract with the energy drink conglomerate.
Klopp addressed the speculation on ServusTV in Germany, revealing his phone had rung with calls about the vacancy – though not from Madrid directly. He expressed sympathy for Alonso, calling him “an outstanding coaching talent” and suggesting the dismissal reveals “something is amiss” at the Bernabeu.
However, now Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has come out to claim that Klopp is “seriously considering” a potential return to management at Real Madrid:
“Jurgen Klopp is seriously considering a return as head coach should Real Madrid make a concrete move for the summer, as exclusively revealed. Real Madrid have always fascinated him. He is happy at Red Bull and has a strong identification with the Red Bull project, but there are at least two projects for which he would return if EVERYTHING fits: Real Madrid and the German national team. Klopp and Real Madrid – one to watch for summer 2026.”
