£67m Arsenal star is now in danger of becoming a bigger waste of money than Gyokeres - opinion

This season is shaping up to be a seriously special one for Arsenal, and Wednesday night saw them take a step closer to their first silverware since the 2020 FA Cup.

Mikel Arteta's side had the tough task of playing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of their League Cup semi-final.

However, instead of settling for a draw, the Gunners came out strong and ended the game with a 3-2 lead, a scoreline that flattered the hosts.

Another positive for Arsenal was that it was a match that gave summer signing Viktor Gyokeres a lifeline in the team, although it also pointed to one of his teammates slowly becoming a bigger waste of money.

Gyokeres' Arsenal career

When Arsenal spent £63.5m to sign Gyokeres in the summer, the fan base was understandably excited.

After all, here was a striker who in his last two campaigns had scored a mind-boggling 97 goals and provided 28 assists in 102 appearances for Sporting CP.

However, the marksman who looked utterly unstoppable in Portugal has looked completely different in England.

Sure, there have been moments of magic, like goals against Leeds United and Atlético Madrid, but going into the game against Chelsea, the 27-year-old had scored just one goal in ten games, and that was a penalty.

So while it might sound harsh, it's not hard to see why some fans and pundits have been getting onto the Swedish international in recent weeks.

Fortunately, instead of it being another disappointing night for the former Coventry City star, Wednesday might just be the turning point he has so desperately needed.

Following a middling first half in which he was fine, if a little underwhelming, he came out firing in the second.

First, he got himself into a good position to make the most of Robert Sanchez spilling Ben White's pass to score his first goal in open play since the Burnley game.

Then, to show he can do more than just score, he held up the ball perfectly for Martin Zubimendi to score the Gunners' third goal.

Now, it's only one game, but it was a semi-final, against another 'big six' side, and if Gyokeres can pull out performances like that more often going forward, he could end up being a massive success in Arteta's system.

However, while the Chelsea game might end up being the making of one summer signing, it also made another's position in the team more concerning.

Which Arsenal star is more concerning than Gyokeres

With Gyokeres now producing nine goal involvements this season and most of the other summer signings doing what would've been expected of them, all eyes once again turn to Eberechi Eze, a man signed for around £67m by Berta.

Arsenal's Eberechi Eze

Now, before the pitchforks and torches come out in full force, the Englishman's truly sensational ability and talent cannot be questioned; to do so would be absurd.

Moreover, when fans look back on this season, it's likely that a large portion will pick out his hat-trick in the North London Derby as their favourite moment.

However, therein lies the biggest problem with the former Crystal Palace star this year: he has only impressed in moments, and even then, there have not been enough of them.

For example, while his performance was out of this world against Tottenham Hotspur, that was the last time he scored a goal in the league, and that was back in November, ten matchdays ago.

Furthermore, his last assist in the league came all the way back in September, on matchday five, against Manchester City.

He has also failed to score in five Champions League appearances, has one in three League Cup games, and, against Portsmouth in the FA Cup last weekend, was comfortably one of the Gunners' most underwhelming players.

Now, the lacklustre output is worrying enough, but something else is starting to get people talking: his lack of game time.

Eberechi Eze minutes per game

For example, since he started the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in mid-December, the "unpredictable" star, as dubbed by Rio Ferdinand, has made one league appearance off the bench, which was a 12-minute cameo against Liverpool.

So with that in mind, it was impossible not to notice his lack of gametime against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Ultimately, Eze is a hugely talented footballer and could still come good for Arsenal.

Yet, with Gyokeres getting himself back on the scoresheet against the Blues, the tag of worst summer signing is moving back to the Englishman.
