Jamie Carragher has revealed he recently underwent a minor knee operation, explaining his absence from some recent Sky Sports duties – including Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap, Carragher was quizzed by Gary Neville about his limp and confirmed he had gone under the knife to tidy up some long‑standing damage.

“Jamie, your knee? Did you do a recent operation?” Neville asked.

“Yeah, it was my cartilage and meniscus, they shaved a little bit,” Carragher replied. “It was just a little thing that got worse and worse and swelled up, it wasn’t like I did something to it.”

The former Liverpool defender explained the issue had been grumbling on for a while before finally flaring up, forcing him to miss studio work for the blockbuster Arsenal vs Liverpool fixture as well as other live broadcasts:

“I missed the Liverpool v Arsenal game [because of the surgery], but the knee just kicked off in the last days,” he said. “It was like a keyhole [incision], not some massive operation.”

Carragher is now back on screen and expects no long-term problems.

His latest operation is the latest chapter in a long history of serious knocks. Persistent knee trouble dogged him during his Liverpool career and even forced him to undergo surgery that ruled him out of the 2002 World Cup with England.

A year later he suffered a broken leg in a challenge from Blackburn’s Lucas Neill at Ewood Park, an injury that required surgery and months of rehab. Those setbacks, along with a later shoulder operation in 2010, left the former defender managing wear and tear long after he hung up his boots.

Now 48 and long retired, it appears those old war wounds are catching up with the Liverpool legend – though he insists this latest procedure was little more than routine maintenance to keep him mobile for his punditry work.
