Buonanotte will now briefly return to Brighton before heading north to sign for Leeds until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Leicester, was close to securing a loan move to Elland Road last summer before Chelsea swooped for the midfielder.
The two-capped Argentina international registered six goals and three assists in 35 games for the Foxes who were relegated to the Championship.
However, regular first-team football has been much harder to find at Stamford Bridge and the recent departure of Enzo Maresca has helped his chances.

talkSPORT understands the agreement to terminate Buonanotte's loan was mutual and viewed as in the best interests of the player.
He will travel today to complete his Leeds loan.
The Argentine will have the opportunity to reignite his career at Leeds under Daniel Farke in a move that could eventually see him find a permanent home following two successive loan spells.
Buonanotte was named as a substitute in Wednesday’s 3-2 Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal but was not used by new Blues’ boss Liam Rosenior.
How does Buonanotte operate?
Buonanotte primarily operates as a No.10 however he is comfortable playing out wide as he did last season.
He is likely to provide another further creative spark that could prove pivotal for the Whites and their bid to avoid relegation.

The attack-minded midfielder will also be tasked with assisting in-form striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin while chipping in with the goals that Leeds hope will fire them to safety.
Buonanotte is well accustomed to the rigours of Premier League football and knows all about the challenges of a relegation battle.
His only goal this season came in the Carabao Cup in Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Lincoln City in round three.
He saved his solitary assist for the Blues for the same competition when he laid on a goal for compatriot Alejandro Garnacho in the quarter-final victory at Cardiff last month.
But his frustrations have been laid bare this season with just 46 minutes of action in the Premier League.
The Argentine heads to Elland Road with Leeds in the midst of some positive form heading into the business end of the season.

That has seen them pull eight points clear of the bottom three in their bid to maintain top-flight status.
