David Ornstein addresses Xabi Alonso and Liverpool speculation

Xabi Alonso’s abrupt dismissal from Real Madrid has unsurprisingly ignited fierce speculation linking the Spanish midfielder-turned-manager with a sensational return to Anfield, particularly as Arne Slot has his fair share of issues this season (although results have thankfully improved since December).

The Spaniard remains a beloved figure at Liverpool following his trophy-laden playing career between 2004 and 2009, making him the popular choice among supporters should a managerial change become necessary. Back in 2024, it was reported that although Liverpool showed interest in Alonso, they quickly moved on after it was made clear that Real Madrid was his preferred destination.

However, David Ornstein, while speaking on the Athletic FC podcast has slated all the speculation as just that – asserting that most it is external noise:

“It’s really disrespectful to think Arne Slot is on his way out of Liverpool, because nobody has any evidence to think that,” he began.

“Ultimately they [Liverpool hierarchy] chose him unanimously back in spring of 2024. Yes, Xabi Alonso appeared to be the favourite in many people’s eyes, yes he ticked a lot of boxes. It was something that was popular with the Liverpool fanbase largely.”

“But it never seemed realistic to the hierarchy and Slot has proved to be a successful appointment so far. Of course, there has been scrutiny in the fanbase with Slot’s style of play and results, and we will have to see how the next six months unfold.”

“There is no doubt there will be plenty of speculation linking Alonso to Liverpool and maybe others like Manchester City.”

Ornstein adds that while external noise will continue, the club is backing Arne Slot “wholeheartedly” at this moment in time:

“There has been external pressure on Arne Slot, I don’t know if it corresponds with their being internal pressure,” he added.

“Do I think the external inks between Liverpool and Xabi Alonso will go away? No, because he is a legend of the club and he was the coach that many of their fans wanted, but they’ve got an impressive coach in charge of them already.”

“Slot is being backed by the club wholeheartedly at the moment.”
