Republican Senator Ted Cruz blasts coach: ‘Hateful and dishonest’

Last week, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr condemned the U.S. federal government as he criticized the official accounts of the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. Kerr’s comments seemed to draw the ire of one Republican senator.

When asked about the moment of silence held for Good before the Minnesota Timberwolves home game against Cleveland on Thursday night, Kerr praised the team for recognizing her life and the tragic incident while blasting the the country for allowing a law enforcement officer to “commit murder and seemingly get away with it.”

“I’m glad that the Timberwolves recognized her life and the tragic nature of her death,” Kerr said, referring to the moment of silence held Thursday night before Minnesota’s home game against Cleveland via [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/jan/10/steve-kerr-condemns-us-government-ice-shooting-minneapolis).  “It’s shameful, really, that in our country we can have law enforcement officers who commit murder and seemingly get away with it.”

Kerr went on to call out the federal government for lying about what happened.

“It’s shameful that the government can come out and lie about what happened when there’s video and witnesses who have all come out and disputed what the government is saying,” Kerr said. “So, very demoralizing, devastating to lose anyone’s life, especially in that manner. So it’s terrible, terribly sad for her family, and for her, and that city, and I’m glad the Timberwolves came out and expressed that sadness.”

Those were obviously some strong words from Kerr, but Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas certainly did not agree as he did not hold back his true thoughts.

“Hateful & dishonest,” Cruz wrote [in a post on X](https://x.com/tedcruz/status/2010077720118735152).

“I don’t know if Steve Kerr is just ignorant or if he is willfully lying,” Cruz continued. “But the video from the officer’s phone shows—unequivocally—that she drove her SUV straight into him & hit him. If you try to run a cop over, you should expect lethal force in defense.”

This is not the first time that Kerr has been open in sharing his political perspectives, and it certainly will not be the last, regardless of whether or not others agree.
