Man United lost out on Conor Gallagher who joined Tottenham, despite interest from Aston Villa.

Man United’s biggest priority is to sign a midfielder in the January window, before likely spending big on a central midfielder in the summer, such as Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton or Elliot Anderson.

However, it is understood that United are keen to add a cheaper midfielder in January, as they want to back Michael Carrick and give him a chance to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Man United, Man City and Newcastle set to battle for Alex Scott

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott had a superb year last year, as he became a regular starter for Andoni Iraola, and also earned his first England call-up from Thomas Tuchel. He hopes to earn a spot in his World Cup squad, but Scott won’t be short of competition from others.

One way that could really boost his chances is if he moves to a bigger club, and it certainly seems a possibility, as reports suggest several Premier League clubs are keen on him. According to TeamTalk, Man United, Man City, Newcastle and Aston Villa have all been monitoring his progress.

The report claims that Bournemouth want to offer Scott a new contract to tie him down, especially because they already risk losing Iraola, as the manager has less than six months left on his contract.

Scott is very highly regarded in the Premier League as an all-rounder-type midfielder. It is no secret that Man City boss Pep Guardiola is a big fan. He was quoted by Sky Sports talking about the 22-year-old, as he once dubbed him “unbelievable” as a youngster.

Man United could sign Scott after missing out on Gallagher

Gallagher would have been a decent addition for Man United, as they require energy and creative quality in midfield, two things that the new Spurs midfielder has in abundance. However, seeing as they missed on Gallagher, Scott could be the ideal alternative.

Scott likes to play as a central midfielder who likes to attack. He is a box-to-box midfielder, but is most effective in transition, when he can play a creative pass to one of the Bournemouth attackers. He would be a fantastic addition to the United midfield, as he could help the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, who’ll likely play in front of him.

He has an estimated market value of around £26m, but it is understood that he will cost much more than that due to his young age, and the fact that, at 22, he’s already an England international.
