The San Antonio Spurs look like an NBA title contender as currently constructed. After beating the Thunder three times in a row, they established themselves as a true threat to win it all. Right now, they sit third in the Western Conference standings.

Victor Wembanyama has made massive strides in his game. Yet, he has struggled with injuries again this season. He is currently on a minutes restriction to help deal with his latest injury. Because of this, the Spurs are a team that could be active at the trade deadline.

CBS Sports has a strange trade proposal that would have San Antonio trade for oft-injured Kristaps Porzingis as a way to improve the team.

Strange Trade Proposal has Spurs Trading for Kristaps Porzingis

Here is the full trade proposal:

Spurs receive: Kristaps Porziņģis

Hawks receive: Harrison Barnes, Kelly Olynyk, 2028 first-round pick (more favorable of Celtics and Spurs)

Trading a first-round pick for Porzingis doesn’t seem to be prudent for a team in San Antonio’s position. Porzingis has played just 17 games this season. He has been dealing with a mix of injuries and a strange illness this season, just as he did last year.

Finding some injury insurance for Wembanyama might be smart. He has only played in 26 games so far this season, so his being traded for as insurance might not be the smartest move. Harrison Barnes has also been solid this season and is one of the veteran leaders in the locker room.

The Spurs have enough trade assets that they could try to make a big move right now if they wanted to. Still, they are young enough that management might decide to wait on making any moves being made this season as they let the team grow into itself.

The Spurs Have Many Options at the Trade Deadline

With the fact that they are so good and still so young, the Spurs have plenty of options to consider at the deadline. They could decide to make a big move and try to make a run at the championship now, with how well they have played against the Thunder.

San Antonio could also decide to stand pat and keep those trade assets to be used in either the offseason or next year, depending on how the trade market shakes out. Right now, the Spurs have the 10th-best offense in the league. Any trade they make would like look to improve that end of the court.

Keeping Wembanyama healthy for the rest of the season is a clear goal for the team moving forward. As long as he is healthy, the Spurs have a shot to win a title. San Antonio is a team that no one wants to see in the playoffs, with him roaming the middle of the paint on the defensive end.

It’s unclear what the Spurs have in mind for the deadline, but they have a month to figure it out.
