Adam Silver confirms discussions with Real Madrid

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that discussions with Real Madrid and other Spanish clubs have taken place about the new European league.

EuroLeague powerhouse Real Madrid have emerged as a key player in the NBA's new Europe project, with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver confirming that talks have taken place.

While FC Barcelona reportedly extended its stay in the EuroLeague for another 10 years, Real Madrid could be moving closer to joining NBA Europe, according to Diario AS. However, no agreement has been signed.

"I'm not ready to confirm specific reports," Silver told reporters on Thursday in Berlin. "I'll confirm that we've had discussions with Real Madrid and other Spanish clubs as well.

"But as I've said, part of these initial round of discussions -- and they've gone on for some time -- I would put more in the category of fact-finding and for me to make sure I fully understand what we would be taking on in terms of a long-term investment, further investment in European basketball," he added.

"So, it would be premature at this moment to talk about more specific conversations with any clubs."

Silver is expected to meet with ownership groups this week as NBA regular-season games take place in Berlin and London.

Major cities such as London, Berlin, Paris, and Madrid are considered prime candidates to host the first NBA Europe franchises. So far, no agreements have been finalized or announced.

The NBA Europe expansion is expected to launch with 16 teams in 2027.
