The January transfer window is gathering pace as clubs look to strengthen for the second half of the Premier League season, and Liverpool are no exception.
The Reds have endured a disappointing first half of the campaign despite a busy summer that brought in Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike. While Wirtz and Ekitike took time to settle, both are beginning to find their feet, though Isak is currently sidelined with injury.
After progressing to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Monday, Liverpool return to league action on Saturday with a home clash against newly promoted Burnley at Anfield.
While focus will be on that fixture, work continues behind the scenes on potential January moves. Liverpool have been linked with a move for several players, while Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi remains a prominent target after a proposed summer switch to Anfield collapsed.
Former Liverpool youth player Joe Anderson has joined Barrow AFC from Sunderland on an 18-month deal, subject to EFL approval, becoming Paul Gallagher’s third signing.
The 24-year-old defender began his career at Liverpool, spending nine years at the club before joining Everton in 2016 at the age of 15. He went on to make over 100 appearances for the U18s and U21s, captaining the Toffees.
Anderson joined Sunderland in 2023 and spent a season on loan at Shrewsbury Town, making 30 appearances. He made seven appearances for Sunderland, including during their promotion-winning campaign, before moving to Barrow.
“I’m absolutely delighted to get the move done. From when I first heard about the interest to when I spoke to the Gaffer moved quite quickly and from the conversations we had I was set on coming here from the get-go,” Anderson said.
“A big thing of why we [Sunderland] went up last year was the changing room, off the pitch and hopefully I can bring that here. On the pitch of course, I hope I can contribute but off the pitch I hope to bring a bit of seniority as well and I want to help the lads, even if it 1,2,3 % more to push up the table then that is what we need to do.
“It’s quite cliché to say but I would say I’m a modern day defender, I pride of clean sheets and think it’s the best way to win football matches, but on the ball I like to bring a calmness and link the defence, midfield and attack.”
